Dental implants are changing the way people
live. They are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth which
look, feel, and function like natural teeth. The person who has lost teeth
regains the ability to eat virtually anything and can smile with confidence.
Tiny titanium posts which are surgically placed in the jawbone where teeth are
missing, provide a stable anchor to attach replacement teeth that look, feel
and function like natural teeth.
For most patients, the placement of dental implants involves two surgical procedures. The first surgery is to place the implant within the bone where the tooth is missing. Over the next four to six months following the surgery, the implants are beneath the surface of the gum tissue healing and bonding to the jawbone. The implant itself acts as a tooth root substitute. After the implant has healed, the next step would be to uncover the implant. This is done by making a small incision in the gum line and attaching a small post that will act as an anchor for the replacement tooth. Most patients experience minimal if no disruption in their normal daily schedule with either surgery.
You may want to investigate implants if:
| 1. | You're embarrassed about missing teeth when you smile or laugh. | |
| 2. | You wear a denture that slips or fits poorly. | |
| 3. | The teeth holding your bridge are loosening or moving. | |
| 4. | Your complete or partial dentures cause discomfort when you eat. |
