PRP allows the body to take advantage of its own normal healing abilities at an accelerated rate. In the past this procedure was confined to a hospital setting, but in recent years technology now permits doctors to harvest and use a concentrated quantity of platelets from the patient during an outpatient or in office surgery.
In the oral surgery practice, PRP has multiple clinical applications. Drs. Perry, Morrison and Waters use PRP in conjunction with replacement of bone during grafting procedures for dental implants, repairing a defect in the jawbone created by removing a tooth, cyst or tumor, and repairing a fistula (opening) between the sinus cavity and mouth.
Included in the many advantages, PRP is safe. Because it is a product of the patient's own blood, there is no possibility of disease transmission. It is convenient from the standpoint that the product is prepared while the patient is undergoing the surgical procedure, and finally, the healing time of the surgical site is accelerated by using this product.
