What Is Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting is an oral surgery performed to remedy defects in the jawbone. It is a form of reconstructive surgery that increases bone density by rebuilding bone in the jaw. Bone grafting procedures may correct defects present from birth, defects due to trauma, defects due to tumor removal, or bone recession due to tooth loss.

Benefits of Bone Grafting

  • Rebuilding and fortifying a weak jaw bone
  • Providing additional support for the teeth and gums
  • Supporting dental implants and implant-supported bridges and dentures
  • Maintaining the facial appearance

Types of Bone Grafting Procedures We Offer

Bone grafting procedures provided by our oral surgeons at Oral and Facial Surgery Associates, LLC include the following.

Socket Preservation
Socket preservation is a bone grafting procedure that is performed after a tooth extraction to preserve the jawbone density and the socket.

Ridge Augmentation
Ridge augmentation is a bone grafting procedure most often performed to rebuild bone density in preparation for dental implants.

Sinus Lifts
A sinus lift is a bone grafting procedure most often performed to fortify the upper jawbone, while lifting the sinuses, to prepare for dental implants.

Infuse® Bone Morphogenic Protein
The Infuse® bone graft is a patented protein product (molecule) that stimulates the body’s cells to form new cartilage and bone. This liquid protein is sprayed on a spongy material that is placed in the area needing new bone. The Infuse® Bone Morphogenic protein procedure eliminates the need to harvest bone from another area of the body.

Platelet-Rich Plasma
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections harness the power of the body’s own remarkable growth factors (platelets) found in the plasma. Platelet-rich plasma injections are a regenerative treatment used in conjunction with bone grafts. PRP injections are used not only in oral surgeries, but to aid in recovery from orthopedic and sports injuries as well.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bone Grafting

Will I be awake during a bone graft procedure?
You may choose from one of several types of anesthesia. If you opt for local anesthesia you will remain awake. If you select IV sedation, you will remain awake, but experience a “twilight sleep.” General anesthesia will put you to sleep during your procedure.
Can I have bone graft surgery while pregnant?
Oral surgery while pregnant is not recommended. Patients should wait until after birth, and be cleared by their physician to schedule any type of oral surgery.
How long does it take to recover from bone graft surgery?
Recovery depends on the type of bone graft. In general, most patients feel recovered within two weeks. However, it can take several months for internal healing.
How long will I have to wait to get dental implants after bone grafting?
Most patients will be ready for dental implants within 3-6 months after bone grafting.
Is platelet-rich plasma safe?
Yes. Platelet-rich plasma uses your own blood in a regenerative capacity.
Do you accept CareCredit for bone graft surgeries?
Yes. Oral and Facial Surgery Associates accepts CareCredit for all oral surgeries.
Will insurance pay for a sinus lift?
Despite the well-documented benefits of dental implants, dental insurance rarely pays for preparatory procedures, such as a sinus lift. However, you should contact your insurance company to confirm.
Can I request general anesthesia for a bone graft surgery?
Yes. General anesthesia is routinely used for bone grafting surgeries.
