What Is a Wisdom Tooth Extraction?
The third set of molars that erupts in teens and young adults can cause myriad problems if there is not enough space in the mouth to accommodate them. Known as wisdom teeth, these molars are prone to causing problems ranging from becoming stuck underneath the gums (impaction) to infection and causing problems with teeth alignment and bite. To prevent these and other problems, most people will have their wisdom teeth extracted by an experienced oral surgeon.
Wisdom teeth that have fully erupted, but are crowding the mouth will be removed, without the need for an incision. Removing partially or fully impacted wisdom teeth will require an incision in the gums to access the tooth and its root. In some cases, the tooth may need to be broken into smaller portions for complete removal.
Some patients may find that they are good candidates for a coronectomy instead of complete extraction. In a coronectomy, only the visible portion of the tooth is removed, leaving the tooth roots intact.
