What Is A Frenectomy?

A frenectomy is a simple oral surgery procedure performed to release the tissues that connect your gums and lips to teeth, or the underside of the tongue to the bottom of the mouth. A labial frenectomy is commonly referred to as a lip tie. It is a minimally invasive, quick procedure that usually only requires a local anesthetic. A lingual frenectomy is commonly referred to as a tongue tie. It is also a minimally invasive oral surgery procedure performed on an outpatient basis. Either procedure may be performed using a laser or a cutting instrument.

  • Improves speech problems (increases range of motion of the tongue)
  • Enhances bite function
  • Opens the airway, helping correct mouth-breathing
  • May prevent snoring and sleep apnea

Are You a Good Candidate for A Frenectomy?

Frenectomies are most often performed if this tissue (known as a frenulum) hinders normal oral functions ranging from nursing to speaking or eating. However, frenectomies are also sometimes necessary to prevent oral health problems, including misaligned teeth or gum recession. In other cases, a frenectomy may be necessary to complete orthodontic care or to ensure the proper fit of a denture or other oral appliance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Frenectomies

Who diagnoses a tongue tie or lip tie?
Your family dentist or family physician may first diagnose the condition. Sometimes lactation consultants suggest that an infant has a tongue tie or lip tie. In other cases, parents notice symptoms and confirm the condition with a medical or dental professional.
How long will it take my child to heal from a tongue-tie surgery?
Infants recover very quickly and often resume feeding immediately. Children typically feel better in 3-5 days, with full recovery complete in a few weeks.
How long does the frenectomy procedure take?
Both labial and lingual frenectomies are short procedures often lasting 30 minutes or less.
Does a frenectomy hurt?
No. The treatment area will be numb, so the procedure is not painful.
What can my child eat after a frenectomy?
Babies often resume breastfeeding immediately following the procedure. Children, teens, and adults should stick to a soft food diet for the first few days following the procedure.
What are the symptoms of a tongue tie or lip tie?
Symptoms may include difficulty breastfeeding, difficulty switching to solid foods, mouth-breathing, snoring, a large gap between front teeth, pain when chewing, and sleep apnea.
Will insurance pay for a frenectomy?
Many dental insurance plans do offer allowances for a frenectomy. Check with your carrier for specific coverage limits.
